Max Weber is credited as one of the three founders of sociology, but his most well-known contribution was his thesis that combined economic and religious sociology. More generally, the word connotes the breaking of a magic spell. Weber used the German word Entzauberung, translated into English as disenchantment but which literally means de-magic-ation. Despite a severe nervous breakdown several years later, Weber produced a body of work that established him as the foremost figure in social thought of the twentieth century.
